Dan is a climate change specialist and geographer who works to prevent and prepare for climate change impacts at a local scale. He believes that fostering a personal connection to our local environment and implementing bold climate policies and programs are needed to build a sustainable future. As a portfolio manager with the Climate Ready Infrastructure Service, Dan brings these two perspectives together to support local, proactive measures that prepare communities for the impacts of climate change. He is especially passionate about implementing nature-based solutions, prioritizing habitat conservation, and creating accessible greenspaces.
Before joining CUI, Dan applied his interdisciplinary background in academia, the non-profit sector, and in the public service. He has written operational policy and supported regulatory implementation for Canada’s federal carbon pricing system; published research about the future of climate change and agriculture, and on municipal renewable energy planning; and worked in habitat conservation and outdoor education. His background reflects his belief that both personal connections to our local environments and bold climate policy are essential to build a sustainable future.
Dan holds a Master’s in Climate Change from the University of Waterloo and a B.Sc. in Environmental Science from the University of Guelph, where he focused on environmental geography, ecosystem services, and food security.
What is your favourite way to spend a day in the city?
Get breakfast at a local bakery before heading out to a museum or art gallery. I’ll spend the evening taking a walk through the biggest park I can find on my way to a concert.
