Ideas That Matter aims to stimulate public discourse and public debate around issues relevant to cities and the values of diversity, community and public good. Founded in 1997, our work is inspired by the wide-ranging ideas and principles of Jane Jacobs, the American-Canadian author and activist best known for her influence on urban studies and her influential book The Death and Life of Great American Cities.

Deep Lake Water Cooling – Toronto’s Miracle on the Waterfront

Deep lake water cooling (DLWC) provides cooling to more than 180 buildings in downtown Toronto through an extensive network of pipes and heat transfer facilities controlled by Enwave Energy Corporation. DLWC is now celebrated internationally and widely touted as “Toronto’s Green Calling Card” for its ongoing contribution to helping the City meet its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 65 per cent by 2030.
