Role Description

CUI is seeking a highly organized and motivated individual to join our team. The Communications Specialist and Event Producer will be responsible for executing communications for the Canadian Urban Institute. This role will also be responsible for production for CUI events.

Responsibilities for the Communications Specialist and Event Producer include:

  • Develop and drive project-specific communications plans, campaigns, and media relations for the roll-out of CUI initiatives and research
  • Write, edit and disseminate news releases related to CUI initiatives and research
  • Manage media requests and build relationships with key journalists and influencers
  • Organize and oversee production for CUI events, including managing and events program and calendar; acting as a primary liaison for speakers, attendees, event venues and vendors; coordinating and drafting content for marketing and promotional materials; collaborating with partners; and overseeing post-event evaluation and follow-up
  • Write and deliver communications products such as newsletters, key messaging related to CUI and its initiatives
  • Maintain and develop materials for CUI’s website, including blog posts, events listings, news updates and research summaries
  • Collaborate with Communications Manager on development and implementation of annual marketing and communications plans based on CUI’s strategic initiatives
  • Solicit work from outside communications vendors (photographers, videographers, web developers etc.) when necessary, and ensure work is delivered on time and meets CUI brand guidelines
  • Support Communications Manager with digital communications
  • Support CUI colleagues with copy editing and design of research projects, proposals and presentations
  • Keep up to date project records and organize project resources to ensure deliverables meet scope, schedule, quality requirements
  • Maintain effective working relationships with partners and clients


  • 2–4+ years’ work experience in communications and/or media relations
  • 2–3 years’ work experience in event planning
  • Experience writing, editing, and disseminating press releases and media advisories
  • Experience with email marketing, specifically Mailchimp
  • Experience writing and editing high-quality, professional communications materials
  • Experience with website management, specifically WordPress and Squarespace
  • Experience using graphic design software is considered an asset
  • Experience with social media management is considered an asset
  • Eligibility to work in Canada
  • Fluency in English and French preferred

Terms of Employment

One Year renewable. Salary for this position ranges from $55,000–$65,000/year commensurate with experience. CUI offers a competitive benefits package. The CUI office is located in Toronto, but this is a national position and candidates may reside in a community of their choosing. This is a highly collaborative position, so candidates will need to be very comfortable working virtually across Canada’s time zones.
